How to convert foreign driving license for foreigners living in Vietnam


You decided to move to Vietnam for a while to work, to travel or simply to escape from the routine humdrum lifestyle in your home country, seeking for new inspiration. And now you are here in Vietnam and you need to settle down quickly. Among many things throwing to you at once, getting a local driving license is a priority. Especially, driving license for motorbikes – a popular transportation means here in Vietnam.


1. Conditions:

  • Foreigners who have been living, working or studying in Vietnam for 3 months or more;
  • Foreign driving license is still valid with no erased or torn manifestation, no difference in identification.
  • No conversion is applied for temporary foreign driving license and international driving license. 


2. Submissions:

A dossier (made by the driver in 01 set) shall be sent directly to the Provincial/Municipal Department of Transport (where the driver’s temporary or permanent residence is registered), including:

  • Application for conversion of driving license according to the set form (template for foreigners);
  • A copy of foreign driving license and the translation of the foreign driving license into Vietnamese certified by a Notarial Service or the Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate;
  • A copy of the passport and a copy of the temporary/permanent residence card or any papers verifying temporary/permanent residence in Vietnam.


The driver will be directly photographed by the Department of Transport and must present the original valid passport, temporary/permanent residence card or any papers verifying temporary/permanent residence in Vietnam and foreign driving licenses for collation.


3. Settling time: 05 working days after receiving complete and valid dossiers


4. Processing fee: 135,000 VND.


5. Dealing agency: Provincial/Municipal Department of Transport
